Inside my diaries: Part one (2005-2006)

Until very recently I had been writing in diaries for over half of my life, since I was 11 years old and 2 weeks away from starting high school. I have only stopped writing a proper diary recently because of this blog and because I am expressing myself more through creative writing than a literal documentation of my thoughts and feelings nowadays. In the past I have read select, hilarious sections from my earliest diary to a few friends and looking at the small pile of diaries when I came home just made me want to read and share some of the stupid things I used to write. As there is so much material I’ll be making this into a regular series of posts if people enjoy it! I will be changing people’s names if they pop up  and all spelling/grammatical mistakes are from past me, I swear.

So, here it goes.

Hello again, Liverpool: A day in the city

It’s hard to pick a favourite city; Paris, Barcelona, Glasgow, they have all forced themselves into my heart over the years but Liverpool is always going to be my home. I often say that if I hadn’t grown up in the area I probably would have moved here for university. However, in the interest of exploring new places I don’t settle here for too long any more, which makes returning even sweeter each time. I must’ve told at least 20 people over the past few months that they have to visit Liverpool if they are going to come to UK, London is great and all but the North is something else. Yes, I am bias but trust me on this one and save yourself some money in the meantime by checking out the North of England. Continue reading Hello again, Liverpool: A day in the city

Goodbye, Barcelona and what is coming next…

I had planned on doing this blog post when I returned last Sunday, however, I had a pretty rough flight home and hardly any sleep the night before so I was too exhausted (and probably a tad too emotional) to sit down and write about leaving a city that has taken my heart.

So why did I leave?

The Palm House

The ticking hands of time and
Many miles more than before is what lies between us now.

But still, I find myself in this place

That’s so similar to what I once called ours.

So I sit on a bench in the same way I did before

And let my hand creep into the empty space that was yours.

The earth smells different to how I remember it but what I remember most is you.

Your hand chained to mine, like I was your anchor.

I had to stay on the ground while your eyes drifted away to the solitude in your mind.

I always felt like they should shine brighter, your eyes

But they were suffocated under the shadow of your sadness.

I found comfort in the smell of the tree-tinged air

The feel of the earth in my palm waiting for me to create something with it.

It wasn’t me who kept everything down

And I was never meant to be an anchor.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres

With this week being Easter holidays I had a lot of free time on my hands… well, I always have a lot of free time on my hands but this week I had a lot more than usual. I decided that this gave me the perfect excuse to do some things in and around Barcelona that I hadn’t had a chance to do yet and the top of my list was visiting the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. I did a little research beforehand but I didn’t want to spoil too much of the experience so apart from the museum opening times, ticket prices and how to get there I knew nothing about Figueres or the museum before I went, which I think was a good way to do it. This trip was also the first I have taken completely by myself to a new place, which is somewhat surprising as I am the type of person who enjoys being alone but I guess sharing experiences with other people is also very rewarding. Today I am getting published… twice!

As if it wasn’t great enough that I am having a piece of fiction published for the first time in Salomé’s first issue (check the post ‘I can finally tell you…’ for more info) I am also getting published over at The F-Word for an article I have been working on for the past month!

I wasn’t joking when I said exciting things were happening, I just couldn’t mention the other one until today! So my article should be up here in the next few hours and as for my piece of fiction – head over to Salomé and purchase a digital copy to read it. You’ll also be supporting a fantastic new project in the process so there’s that!

I apologise for how short this post is but I am currently using free train station WiFi on my phone in Figueres on my way back from the Dalí museum but you now have my published things to read! Go on, it’ll make me more than happy, even if you hate both pieces.
